Salt Overboard, Sundial in Reverse

DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that all the way up to the mid-twentieth century, crusty old drunks were hired on merchent ships just before an ocean crossing, so as to be used as unwitting sacrifices to any seamonsters that might be encountered? Typically what happened was that no seamonsters appeared, and the unfortunate salt was tossed overboard instead of paid.
It's true -- really!
