I was watching a late-night tv talk/variety type show recently and one of the guests felt it was necessary to utilize a common expletive, which resulted in a reaction from the audience of laughter and what could be interpreted as smug hipness. In many cases, it would seem that the only thing that could be amusing about the use of various profanities is the belief that someone somewhere would be offended by this "excercise in free speech" (" Yow -- you couldn't say that in front of Aunt Millie!").
It seems to me that in our modern world profanity is so common that the number of people being offended must be shrinking dramatically. Soon there will be just a few people who will be shocked and offended by anything once considered profane or obscene , and once they are gone, will the "humor" in using profanity disappear? Perhaps there should be some sort of Prude Preservation program set up to protect this endangered species...
