Avoid the Void

It's Halloween, so there simply must have some sort of related imagery!
A while back, the name "Rick Void" popped in my head -- Thought it could be the name of an obscure, long forgotten comic book/cartoon character. Yeah, Rick Void: Time Drifter
Rick's milieu is that through some chronological quirk, he is continuously drifting forward in time! Yes, he is trapped on a single temporal path which moves in only one direction! He cannot move backward! He cannot move sideways! Though he is moving forward, he cannot actually reach the future -- for he is trapped in some weird, unending present, an eternal NOW! He can only travel to the past through memory -- and can only imagine what the future will bring!!
Perhaps he should have some kind of sidekick in his adventures -- Hobart Contemporaneous... yes, that sounds like a good name...

Sweeping The Future, Feathered Flight

I've seen commercials those Dyson vacuum cleaners. The chap seems quite determined to create the ultimate vacuum... I think we all know where this will lead...

Textiblah

The other day as I walked south on LaSalle (doin' the job, dontcha know...), there appeared to be a blind person with a seeing-eye dog walking in my direction (not uncommon downtown), so was prepared to maneuver myself so as not to obstruct. As I got closer I found it was a sighted person walking their dog... texting and not looking where they were going.

I thought -- "hmmm" (as I often do). Now, what if in the future, texting on these little communication devices becomes such an addiction for some people, that they'd purchase specially trained dogs to lead them around the busy sidewalks so they wouldn't have to let their attention stray from their all-important texting?

Blindfold Dartboard Spinning Wheel Election

I had an idea for a "presidential lottery" quite a while ago, and used various doodles (unused and some "re-purposed") to ad some visual interest to a silly (or maybe not!) idea.

Invasion of the Hair Raisers

In the middle part of the 20th Century, there was great worry about the possiblity of invasion from Mars and/or Venus. The Governments spent time and resources studying the problem. Would Mars launch an all-out attack, or or just a series of clandestine operations to gain control and enslave the Human race? Women of Earth worried that Venus would kidnap all the handsome men, leaving only the geeks and nerds for them to choose from.

But while all eyes had been turned in apprehension to our nearist planetary neighbors, little did we know of the horror that awaited.

How could we have known that...

As more and more radio and television signals beamed out into space, alien societies took notice. On the cold, wet giant, Neptunians had never even known about HAIR, all creatures on the planet being bald. But that all changed when a haircare product commercial, featuring the driving sound of The American Breed's hit single Bend Me, Shape Me invaded their television airwaves. They soon felt shame for the naked pates. Jealousy grew in the hearts of the Children of the Neptune, and unable to grow their own hair, set out to cover their blank noggins with luxurious locks stolen from the scalps of innocent earthlings

Yes, Bend Me, Shape Me, so innocently used in hair product commercials would in fact become an anthem of doom; the clarion call of Armageddon.

Neptunians swarmed the planet, arriving in saucers and carrying specially designed ray guns that would remove the enitire head of hair from a victim and transmit it to the aliens skull. Hair raising, indeed!

It had looked pretty grim for Earth -- no defense had been established to prevent such an attack. But as doom had been summoned via Television so was salvation! Through the efforts of a top secret agency, a special television program KOJAK was developed, and beamed directly at the alien's recievers. Through the scientifically designed "coolness" of the bald detective, played by hair challenged actor Telly Savalas, the alien invaders grew to believe that baldness was now where it was at, and no longer felt the need to cover their craniums. They returned to their ships and left the planet. They did take all the Tootsie Pops, however.

The Face of Hang Up

Hmmm, now who could this chap be? Perhaps this is a guy who's thinking "I can't believe I ate that last piece of scorpion pie!" -- but I think not -- I'm leaning towards this theory: In an alternate world where video-phones have become the norm, the phone would ring unexpectedly, and it would be this guy who says "Congratulations! You've just been selected to win a trip for two to Branson!"

Prude Preservation

I was watching a late-night tv talk/variety type show recently and one of the guests felt it was necessary to utilize a common expletive, which resulted in a reaction from the audience of laughter and what could be interpreted as smug hipness. In many cases, it would seem that the only thing that could be amusing about the use of various profanities is the belief that someone somewhere would be offended by this "excercise in free speech" (" Yow -- you couldn't say that in front of Aunt Millie!").
It seems to me that in our modern world profanity is so common that the number of people being offended must be shrinking dramatically. Soon there will be just a few people who will be shocked and offended by anything once considered profane or obscene , and once they are gone, will the "humor" in using profanity disappear? Perhaps there should be some sort of Prude Preservation program set up to protect this endangered species...
